Looking for a Waterproof Smartphone? Here’s the list of the Best Waterproof smartphones – Moto G, Sony Xperia Z3+ and more

So you’re in the market for a waterproof phone. Unfortunately, you don’t have a wide range of options available.

Before we start, you should first know that the phones aren’t waterproof, they are water-resistant . Second, know that waterproofing is a protection measure, not a feature that you can actually use.

Top of the Line: Sony Xperia Z3+

Of all the waterproof phones here, this is the most expensive but also the most usable. Why? Because most touchscreens don’t work when the phone is wet. With beds or streaks of water on the screen, swipes and taps don’t register properly. However, that is not the case with the Sony Xperia Z3+, which is the only waterproof phone we have used that retains touchscreen usage when wet. That said, the Z3+ has major heating problems and we don’t think it is worth the Rs. 55,900 price tag. But if you are adamant about using a phone while you go trekking in the rain, then the Z3+ is the wisest option. Just don’t stress it to boiling point by running heavy apps.

Best Budget: Moto G (2015)

At the opposite end of the price spectrum, Motorola’s new Moto G is the best budget waterproof phone you can buy. In general, its water resistance is pretty good, with no issues if you were to take it into the shower or out in moderate rain. But don’t go crazy. The back cover doesn’t fit snugly, so a little water gets into the back every time. Make sure you wipe the phone dry every chance you get, because we aren’t 100% sure about this device’s longevity from a waterproofing perspective.

Value for Money: Samsung Galaxy S5

When it launched at over Rs. 50,000, the Samsung Galaxy S5 seemed like a ridiculous idea. But now, it’s one of the best smartphones after a price cut . At roughly Rs. 23,000, it’s the best waterproof smartphone from a value-for-money perspective. You get top-notch specs, a fantastic camera, a sharp screen, and  innovations like the fingerprint scanner. The Galaxy S5 uses flap covers to protect its ports from water damage. The flaps do seem a little flimsy, although we haven’t yet heard many reports about them breaking off.

Selfie & Style: HTC Desire Eye

It’s hard to fathom why HTC didn’t make a bigger deal about the Desire Eye’s waterproofing. It is definitely the most chic waterproof phone we have seen. Plus, the 13-megapixel front-facing camera is currently the best selfie camera in a smartphone. Indeed, the HTC Desire Eye scores high on style points. Just be aware that this phone has strictly average battery life, so if that’s important to you, you should skip this handset.

All-Rounder: Sony Xperia Z3 Compact

Arguably the best phone of 2014, the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact proved that good things come in little packages. The 4.6-inch screen somehow feels just right for one-handed use. It looks fantastic, its performance is as good as anything you’ll see, it has incredible battery life, it has an above-average camera, it now runs Android Lollipop, and it combines all those elements into one neat little device that fits perfectly in one hand without seeming too small. We have recommended this handset to several users, who have all loved it. At Rs. 30,000, this is solid buy if ever there was one.

Special Mention: Sony Xperia Z1

Sony rules the roost with waterproof phones and the two-year-old Z1 shows why. Yes, it has some issues with the screen and the battery which prevented us from recommending this phone to buyers when it cost Rs 45,000. But now, with a price drop that brings it to Rs. 17,000, this one is mighty tempting. The Snapdragon 800 processor is still as powerful as anything you’ll see, the camera is wonderful, and the design oozes class. If the Moto G feels a tad under-powered, go for it. Just know that it probably won’t get updates to new versions of Android, so you might want to install a third-party ROM like CyanogenMod.
